Title: With Burning Concern: Racism in the World and the Church
Date: 20 February 2020
Please note that this is a virtual retreat. You will need a free Zoom account to participate.
If we look at the lives of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Louise de Marillac, and Mother Catherine Spalding, we clearly see three great role models for how to lead an “incarnational” way of life. One who follows this lifestyle must think of themselves as the hands and feet of Christ, root themselves in the Gospel, and learn to recognize the holiness that is found whenever we love and serve those that are most downtrodden and marginalized in our world. And, on May 25, 2020, the death of George Floyd at the hands of police, and the massive demonstrations that followed, reminded millions that racism has never ceased to be an issue in our world. As people of faith, if we hope to lead incarnational lives of our own, we must learn about racism and its history, oppose it in our own communities, pray for its end, and love and serve those affected by it.
That is why, on February 20, 2021, we hope that you will join Nazareth Retreat Center and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Associates for a three-part virtual event that seeks to educate on the history of racism in our region, learn about obstacles that still stand in our way to bringing about a world without racism, and provide practical advice on what we must do to remove these obstacles. There will be presentations, and brief Q&As, with Dr. Joseph Flipper, Associate Professor of Theology and Assistant Director of the Ethics and Social Justice Center at Bellarmine University, Annette Mandley Turner, the Executive Director of the Office of Multicultural Ministries at the Archdiocese of Louisville, and Bishop John Stowe of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky. We hope that you will join us.
