Mary Oliver, one of the most quoted American poets, has gained a devoted audience of her poetry. Most particularly, her poems, “The Summer’s Day” and “Wild Geese,” which are referenced frequently during religious liturgies. Whole sermons are often built around her contemplative reflections. In this virtual retreat, we will practice meditative reading, dialogue, and ponder poems from Oliver’s volume, Thirst; her predominantly religious-themed work written after the death of her long-time partner. Consider preparing for this retreat by pre-reading Thirst. This will allow for a deeper engagement with her poems on a personal level before taking up spiritual exercises, like reading and journaling together with guidance from Jonathan Montaldo.
